What Kind of Hail Can Cause Serious Harm to Your Roof?

Your roof goes through a lot during the cooler months, from high winds to heavy snows and hail. One thing you should watch out for is hail damage. After a storm, it is always best to get in touch with a reliable contractor for an inspection. Keep in mind, not all signs of damage become obvious until water starts leaking into your indoor spaces. Also, do not delay roof repair if necessary to avoid costly problems in the future.

Keep on reading to find out what kind of hail can damage your roof.

Dime-Sized Hail

Hail in the size of a dime does usually cause harm to roofing systems in good condition. However, it can tear off asphalt shingles with existing damage or compromise aging roofs. At high velocity, even hailstones this size can harm fairly new shingles and other roofing materials.

Quarter-Sized Hail

While dime and quarter-sized hail may not significantly damage your roof, it can accelerate its deterioration. It can destroy already damaged slate and asphalt shingles. The higher the velocity of the hailstones, the more likely they are to cause harm. If you see hailstones of this size outside your home, contact a local roofing contractor to check your roof.

Half-Dollar Sized Hail

Hailstones larger than a quarter can cause serious harm to your roof. They can potentially damage shingles and even break slate or dent metal roofing if they fall at high speeds. It is also a good idea to get a roof inspection if you notice hail of this size outdoors.
