Storm Damage: Tips on Maximizing Your Insurance Claim

Ideally, you should familiarize yourself with the homeowner insurance claim process even before your roof or other parts of your home get damaged by a storm. This way, you’ll know what to do in such a situation and be able to avoid making rash decisions that could cost you much more.

In this post, top-rated roofing contractor Summit Roofing & Restoration, Inc. shares the basic steps that you should take in case your roof is damaged by a storm.

Contain the Damage

When your roof has sustained damage from a storm, one of the first things that you should do is to prevent the situation from getting worse. This does not necessarily mean climbing to your roof and doing some temporary repairs yourself—make sure to leave such tasks to professionals.

In the meantime, while you’re waiting for the experts to inspect and fix your roof, you can cover holes in your roof if there’s a way for you to do this safely. Always remember that your safety should be your top priority.

Document the Damage

Before performing roof repair, make sure to take photos and videos of the damage. The full extent of the problem should be clearly seen in the photos and videos. If you have pictures and videos of your home before the damage occurred, you can include these in your documentation too.

Call Your Insurance Agent

Let your insurance agent know that your roof has been damaged during the storm. Send them a copy of the list of damages and repair expenses that you’ve paid out-of-pocket.

Consider Getting Your Own Adjuster

Your insurance company will assign an adjuster who will assess the damage to your roof and determine how much is covered by your policy. In this case, don’t accept their assessment blindly. It’s good to have at least two estimates from contractors so that you’ll have a rough idea of how much would be a fair amount.

You can also consider getting your own adjuster so that you can be confident that they would advocate for you and have your best interests in mind.
