Wind Damage: How Do You Know If Your Roof Has It?

After a storm, you should have your roof checked by a professional. Even if the system appears fine from afar or the ground, it may actually be suffering from problems like wind damage. It is best to leave this job to an experienced roofing professional for your safety and to avoid any further issues.

Read on to find out if you have a wind-damaged roof.

Shingle Granule Loss

Asphalt shingles have granules that give them their appeal and keep them protected against the sun’s harsh ultraviolet rays. High winds can loosen these protective granules, leaving shingles unprotected against direct sunlight. Discolored areas or bald spots on your roof are common indications of shingle granule loss. You may also find a significant amount of granules in your gutters.

Blown-Off Shingles

High winds can knock over shingles from your roof. If you notice that there are missing shingles from your roof, contact local roofers immediately. Blown-off shingles rainwater to penetrate your living spaces, potentially causing water damage.

Curling Shingles

Your roof’s edges are more prone to wind damage. When you call for an inspection, your roofer will see if there are curling or peeling shingles on the edges of your roof. Damaged shingles will not be able to effectively shed water, so have them repaired or replaced as necessary.

Damaged Chimneys

Your chimney can help you determine if your roof has wind damage. If it looks bent or is in a weird angle, it definitely is a sign you need to get in touch with a professional. The chimney may be crooked because the seal around it that protects your roof from leaks has been compromised.
